In 2019, the Ontario Government cut education resulting in an expected budget shortfall of $67.8M for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). The TDSB has directed some of these cuts to the Priority Schools Initiative (PSI) program, which historically has provided free space for organizations like Lay-Up. On top of this, the Ontario Government cut funding to children and youth at-risk by $84.5M. These cuts severely impact Lay-Up’s access to free space in the communities we operate, something we have relied on for the previous 6 years. This funding was essential to subsidize costs in order to acquire permits for use of school facilities for programming. They provided a safe space to play and learn. A space to grow. Without it, the 1500 youth we serve are at risk. We need your support. PSI Cuts could create a shortfall of nearly $150-200k in necessary funding resources for Lay-Up programming.
We help vulnerable children by supporting their personal development through basketball and off-court education. Our goal is to empower them with the confidence and life skills to be community leaders of tomorrow. Lay-Up provide youth in Toronto with a safe space to learn and grow. A space to play.
Lay-Up just kicked off the start of its after school programming on October 21st and with over 18 camps across six high priority Toronto neighbourhoods, Lay-Up will provide free basketball programming to nearly 500 youth but providing this type of service in the future is in jeopardy due to provincial cuts to education and its impact on youth development organizations.

“Over the last 3 years, I have watched my children grow up in the Lay-Up program. As a part of Lay-Up, my children have developed an understanding of right vs. wrong, how to express themselves and what they want to be when they grow up. Everyday, I hear about a new off-court workshop and it is amazing to see how my children engage without the pressures of school. Lay-Up staff have been amazing mentors for my children, and the opportunity for them to be coaches one day is inspiring to them. Being a part of Lay-Up’s programs develops a positive outlook and keeps children out of the neighborhood or at home where they often develop negative attitudes. The pride they have in being a part of a team is amazing for their emotional health. I wish that all parents in our neighborhood could send their kids to Lay-Up programs!”
