Throughout the pandemic, the levels of physical activity for children and youth have dropped severely. Youth across Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas who were already facing systemic barriers, have seen these factors amplified by COVID-19.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
The World Health Organization recommends “150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week.
THE DECLINE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN THE PANDEMIC HAS BEEN SEVERE
“Only 4.8% of children (ages 5-11) and 0.8% of youth (ages 12-17) were meeting 24-hour movement behaviour guidelines during COVID-19 restrictions, compared to the 15% prior to the pandemic.” - ParticipACTION

Lay-Up is providing an essential service at a time when it is needed most. As one of the few organizations in the country providing basketball programming right now, we have a combination of virtual and contactless in-person options to meet the needs of all participants.
